Poem - The Descent

The Descent
by Patrick Mulvihill

Gnashing around me
Razors so deadly
Dodging and splashing
Slipping, I'm falling

So hungry, they’ll bite me
Only one exit
Swollen, this pipeline
Slipping, I’m falling

Then, the chorus sings despair
Orphan organs cry for air
Fears abundant
No courage left
Down the staircase without steps

Slide down the rabbit hole. (But a wide-mouthed bear is waiting)
Just hold your breath and you’ll be fine. (No - I don’t trust you)
You’re safe in this cradle, believe me. (Well, I have to. What choice is there?)
Yes! Now look up and tell me what you see…

Oh, pulsing in time
A heart much bigger than mine
Tempo One-Fifty
Beating just for me

Oh, Salvage your mind
And sway with this beat so divine
Burning minor key
Unlock the gate, slip free.

I will see you through this maze
Take my hand, I'll lead the way
Because I’ve always known this place
A nightmare world that I create
I will find the exit sign
Rip the red gates open wide
When this phobia will die
We'll fill our lungs and see the light

The gates are open wide
Take my hand, I'll save your life
Follow me down, down, down.
